About Us – The Scots Independent

The Scots Independent was first founded in 1926 by the Scots National League, with the mission of promoting the vision of an independent Scotland. Since its very first issue, the publication has been dedicated to fostering national awareness and supporting the movement toward self-government.

As the longest-running political newspaper in Scotland, the Scots Independent has played a central role in the country’s political discourse throughout the 20th century and continues to this day. In 1934, the paper lent its support to the newly formed Scottish National Party (SNP), becoming a vital voice for independence while maintaining its status as an independent publication.

Over the decades, the Scots Independent has built a strong reputation for its editorial integrity and continuous publication, featuring contributions from respected editors, writers, and cultural figures across Scotland. Each generation of staff has carried forward the newspaper’s commitment to amplifying the voice of independence and reflecting Scotland’s political and cultural life.

In 2000, the Scots Independent expanded into the digital age with the launch of The Flag in the Wind, a weekly online edition that brought its commentary and reporting to a global audience. Later, in 2015, the website was modernized to meet the needs of readers in the digital era, ensuring accessibility and continued engagement with Scotland’s independence movement.

Today, the Scots Independent remains a respected, independent voice in Scottish media — a platform that combines tradition with modern journalism, dedicated to telling Scotland’s story and supporting its journey toward independence.
